The Wasted Debate Last Night

I'm not bitter, I'm livid.

I didn't bother watching the debate last night, because I knew what was coming. Each and every time we have our candidates in the same place at the same time, it's one big game of stupid. Flag pins? Tuzla? Who the hell cares? Distractions like this are what got us into Iraq in the first place - a media unwilling to do the tough reporting or ask the tough questions, and instead getting caught up in the emotion of the moment.

Yesterday a major new report was released by Rand Corporation. It found, according to USA Today:

Roughly one in five U.S. troops is suffering from major depression or post-traumatic stress from serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and an equal number have suffered brain injuries, a new study estimates.

Only about half of them have sought treatment...

Rand described this, rightfully, as a major health crisis among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
Where was the question about that? You think that ABC could nix one question about pointless stupidity, and ask the candidates what they would do about this crisis. I know we veterans would have sure appreciated it.

The excuse from pundits stepping-up to defend ABC is that, well, we've had 20 debates and we've gone over all the issues, and people don't want to hear it anymore.

Oh really? I don't remember any debate where we talked seriously about when it is proper and not proper to deploy our military. Are we going to continue preemption and nation building? Is there any situation where that might be called for? I haven't heard that question asked in a debate.

Have we talked about the GI Bill in the debates? What other benefits for veterans would they increase or decrease, and by what amounts?

How do they propose, with the budget crunch, to ensure that the Department of Veterans Affairs is fully-funded?

There are, literally, dozens of hours of debate that we have not had on troops' and veterans' issues alone, because no one wants to ask the questions. ABC had a chance to, last night, in what could be the final Democratic debate. They could have run the gamut of issues that haven't been talked about in any debate, but are critically important to Pennsylvania and the nation.

Instead, we're stuck with an hour on pointless games, and no answers. Thanks a lot.

Here is another news item they did not talk about last night.

"The Dallas Morning News reports that city's VA Medical Center officially closed its psychiatric wing after the fourth mentally-ill veteran committed suicide this year. The hospital was rated the nation's worst VA facility in a 1995 study, though a spokeswoman said that "more than $250,000 has been spent during the last six months to eliminate suicide risks" there. In November, CBS reported that "at least 6,256 US veterans committed suicide in 2005 - an average of 17 a day."

But with soldiers regulating a 6 way civil war in Iraq, begging for resources in Afghanistan, and offing themselves in Dallas, the debate chose to focus on lapel pins and the price of gas.

"No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided." - Barack Obama

Perhaps Mr. Soltz............. (4.00 / 4)
Perhaps you should invite the candidates to a debate?

Have a panel of Veterans ~ experts in areas of OUR concern:
Afghanistan and Iraq and this mission...
Deployments....
Respect for the needs of military personnel and their families.....
VA Mental Health Care and Substance Abuse issues....
VA medical Care......
Homelessness........
GI Bill........
Family Services........
Etc, etc, etc................................................

Our Main Stream Media is hopelessly lost in tabloid.
I actually think they believe it is real news.
They present "reality TV" meaningless crap ~ they've spent millions and called their greatest minds to the task and this is as good as it gets?!

Do you really think "they" are capable of ~ or qualified to ask the real meaningful questions?

Lets do it ourselves...........................
And soon.

How many seconds were spent on Iraq? (4.00 / 1)
You know what, it's just as well because what those two yahoos don't know about Iraq or when the military should be deployed is A LOT!

Hillary's Umbrella Protection (4.00 / 1)
In the Middle East, in any skirmish that comes up, our troops are GOING IN. That was the bomb Hillary Clinton dropped on America during the ABC debate, and nobody even blinked.

As Rachel Maddow put it tonight on COUNTDOWN, "Once again, the lead story gets buried."

"So?" -- Dick Cheney, Vice President of the United States of America

One Dem candidate talks about veterans issues constantly (4.00 / 1)
...while the other Dem candidate rarely talks about it at all, except to recite anecdotes that may be true, and may not. One Dem candidate's campaign people responded to Sgt. Ty Ziegel; the other Dem candidate's campaign people couldn't get him out of their office fast enough.

I'm voting for the one who's always talking about what's best for our troops and what our veterans deserve. I'm not the least bit "undecided" or looking at ZZ Top as a possible last resort. Our "last resort" is the current Democratic candidate who talks all the time about the troops and veterans. Anything else is just kidding around, which, if carried too far, will get you a big, fat, nasty, President John McCain.

What was the question again?
