Morale Suppression Squad Strikes Again

by: LT Nixon

There was some fierce opposition to lowering the drinking age earlier this month by busybodies who have nothing better to do than legislate the morality of military personnel. Now, there's a bill out there calling for a ban on base of the horrible terrorist threat posed by. . .porn? Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga) explains:

Broun said his bill, titled "The Military Honor and Decency Act," is needed to close a loophole in current law that allows the sale and rental of sexually explicit material on military bases both in the United States and abroad. "Allowing the sale of pornography on military bases has harmed military men and women by escalating the number of violent, sexual crimes; feeding a base addiction; eroding the family as the primary building block of society; and denigrating the moral standing of our troops both here and abroad," said Broun, a physician and former Marine reservist.

Why does Congress waste time with things like this, when there are much more pressing issues at hand in regards to the military.

I just got an email about this. (0.00 / 0)

Forget better GI Bills, forget VA Healthcare.... lets get rid of nudie mags!

Waste of time, everyone knows that within 1 mile of almost every post there is a huge sex shop anyway. Are we going to shut them down now too?

Yeah they'll shut those down (4.00 / 3)
But they will leave all the loan shops charging 38% interest to naive soldiers.

Its shit like this that caused Heartbreak Ridge to be Marine movie instead of an Army one!! I can't stand the false Puritanism that pervades this country.

What are (0.00 / 0)
you talking about? Marines are the kings of drunken brawls, porn, and kinky sex in boot motels. That said, lower the drinking age already. I have seen too many young guys with a lot of promise get f#@!d royally over having a beer or two under the age of 21.

[ Parent ]
Except that there were no Marines at Heartbrick Ridge. (0.00 / 0)
Oh, and by the way, I saw more marines carried out of bars puking outside of Fort Sill, while us soldiers were still pounding beers!!

[ Parent ]
Must have (4.00 / 1)
been boots. Oh well. I dont think there are too many soldiers who can outdrink the boys at old Camp Horno. We used to go through fifths of 100 proof liquor in under 10 minutes. That said, lets lower the drinking age, make for a lot more drunken fun.

[ Parent ]
Oh yeah (0.00 / 0)
that part of the movie was weird. They probably should have called it Iwo Jima or something. Maybe in 20 years, they will make a Marine movie entitled Jolan Park.

This is clearly a woman who has never accidently walked into engineering berthing during porn night...

Ha ha ha! (0.00 / 0)
"Porn is a sad and lonely world. . . ."

I need to write that down.

Maybe I'm too libertarian....who cares (4.00 / 1)
what people read? If some want to read the New Yorker and some want Playboy...give them choices. Some read comic books and some read English Lit.

Puritanism is over the top with some of these leglislators. They need to get real about VA care and troops coming home and stop worrying about what may or may not be porn.

Damn I'm getting too old for this much stupidity running rampant.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want. I'm very experienced!

Too Libertarian? (0.00 / 0)
No way, you are dead on correct.  Too libertarian is when I advocate the legalization of crystal meth (topic for another post).

Degrees of porn (4.00 / 3)
The "porn" that is on the shelf at AAFES is pretty bland.

The stuff on the shelf is pretty bland and I think it is basically Playboy. Hustler is long gone off the shelfs and so is Penthouse and their sister publications.

Am I a porn afficiando? No, but I am also a married guy with young kids and reading porn is not on the list like it might have been when I was 19 in ROTC at College. Nixon on the other hand, LOL LOL

I am a product of Ft. Benning where we train men to do what is otherwise absolutely horrible. We train men to do absolutely brutal things but we do not want them to be able to buy soft porn like Playboy?

We are told we are a nation at war but we do not want soldiers to drink beer, smoke or chew, and now we do not want them to read Playboy.

I have seen some damn horrible things to a lot of men that I care about over the last few years and I have also done some damn horrible things in the defense of this Country. There is one hell of a disconnect going on because people do not have a clue what war is all about when they want to legislate away Playboy on base.

We had some pretty... (0.00 / 0)
....disgusting "porn" whenever we stopped in Japan that found its way circulating amongst the boat.  I won't describe it since this is a site in good taste.

Local market (0.00 / 0)
OK, I can only speak about the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, AAFES, aka PX.

Have not got a clue about ship stores or whatever.

What is sold on Army bases is soft soft porn. Last I looked at was only Playboy and some topless magazines. The article references Penthouse but I do not believe AAFES carries it anymore.

I am near a Navy BX that I visit a couple times a year, not that I am rummaging through the magazines as my kids and wife are with me, but my glancing never saw anything worse than what is at AAFES.

[ Parent ]
Don't know much about Navy (0.00 / 0)
Let me jump in as someone who has never ever been on a Navy Ship. I may have attended some Navy PME, but would not have a clue as to what direction you turn to salute when boarding.

That said, if there is some sort of Navy BX onboard a ship, I think it might be a bad idea to have any kind of porn while you are at cruise. But I would leave that to experts, like Nixon!!!

Army bases on the other hand, no problem!!

But hey, I support the complete removal of on post drinking ages for service members.

[ Parent ]
There isn't really... (0.00 / 0)
...a store on a submarine.  Although, the guy who ran the MWR fund bought a bunch of cheap cigarettes in Thailand and sold them to get money for our Xmas party.  The porn we got was from the streets of Japan, and just kind of floated around.

[ Parent ]
So, at 18 years of age . . . (4.00 / 1)
I can die for my country (or, as Lt. Nixon said elsewhere, launch a nuke) but I can't have a beer and I can't look at a skin mag without "denigrating the moral standing of our troops". Who is this asshole? Very soon, I would expect to see legislation introduced that would prohibit use of the word "fuck" anywhere in the military. In my experience, it was the most often used word. Thus, should such legislation pass, the military would be permanently silenced and cease to exist. Instant disarmament!

Hey at least today's 18 y/o can vote (0.00 / 0)
It was still 21 to vote when my buddies went to Vietnam and I was sitting in Oakland watching too many PTSD guys come home through our base.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want. I'm very experienced!

[ Parent ]
HA HA this is stupid! (0.00 / 0)
Even if all that "dirty" material was taken off post, and let's just say for one minute that the sex shops that are within walking distance from almost every base were shut down.  There's still the internet and just about every single soldier has it in their barracks room.  They can either purchase it and have it shipped straight to them or, thanks to technology, they can just download it right there in the privacy of their living space.

Guys will always be guys and well some chicks like it too!  I stand in judgment of NO ONE because I know that for some people it's just something they like and most are responsible about it.  Very few people actually develop issues that affect their jobs or family life.  I refuse to believe that porn would be the soul reason for the break down of a family...not with all these deployments!   Paul Broun needs to get a freaking clue!  Since when is anyone's (especially a soldier's) moral standing based on the drinking age and/or the ability to obtain pornography?  I've known plenty of people who didn't indulge in either and still needed some training in morality and how to treat other human beings (i.e. their spouse).  Even if you raise the drinking age to 35, there will still be underage soldiers (and civilians) who will find a way to get it.  Porn is much the same way...if you take it off the shelves at a store, they will find it somewhere else.  If all else fails, some will probably get a camcorder and make it themselves.

Porn will always exist in some form or fashion because why?  Because there's a MARKET FOR IT.  The only business that even compares is weight loss products and I bet that still doesn't even come close.  The reason for the increase of violent and sexual crimes has nothing to do with porn it is because more people have confidence in the system and so folks report more than ever before.  ALSO it seems that there's an issue with people in the military and crying wolf and as a result when someone really is a victim of violence or sexual harassment or abuse, it makes it harder for them to get the attention they deserve.

Representatives need to stop focusing on the wrong part of the story and stop trying to distract the American public from the elephant in the room (Iraq).

.

If they are worried about what porn does to you morally (4.00 / 1)
They should see the effects of war.

"No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided." - Barack Obama

Take por off the shelf. (0.00 / 0)
