GI Bill Passes Senate; 22 Senators Don't Support Troops

We wanted to get 60 votes.  67 would have been a resounding success.  When it was all over, we ended up with 75.

WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans have broken with President Bush to help Democrats add support for veterans and the unemployed to a bill paying for another year of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The 75-22 vote also added billions of dollars in other domestic funds such as heating subsidies for the poor and money for fighting wildfires to the $165 billion for the military operations overseas.
::
The huge tally in the Senate was driven by $15.6 billion over two years to extend unemployment benefits by 13 weeks and more than $50 billion over the upcoming decade to provide returning Iraq war veterans with sharply increased college aid.

The fight is far from over, however.  The bill now goes back to the House, where it's still not veto-proof at this point.  The good news, though, is that among the anti-troop Republican ranks, the fear seems to be spreading.  As an example of this, several Republican senators--including Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX)--switched their votes this morning at the last minute--once they saw it was going to reach the 60-vote threshold.

And, in case you were wondering, Senator John McCain--who's argued vociferously against the Webb Bill--skipped the vote.  He was one of only three senators to do so--one of whom was Ted Kennedy, the senior Massachusetts senator who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.  Instead, John McCain is out in California, criticizing gay marriage on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and then going to raise money for his own campaign at an event held by the San Diego Chargers owner.

John Cornyn, the other target of the recent VoteVets ads, voted against the bill.  Here's the full list:

Jim Inhofe Must Be Scared (0.00 / 0)
Even Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe, one of Bush's staunchest supporters, voted for this bill. He must be afraid of his challenger, State Sen Andrew Rice, who has an outstanding record of support for veterans and military families. Our other senator, Tom Coburn, did not vote at all.

This is wonderful news! (0.00 / 0)
Although, I noticed that both of my senators - Hatch/Bennett - voted against.  No surprise there.  They support the troops the way a John supports a hooker.

"No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided." - Barack Obama

I'm surprised at Hutchison's move (4.00 / 1)
But not McCain. He can't claim business on the campaign trail (both Clinton and Obama made it to vote). He's covering all his bases by skipping on the vote. He's the most gutless maverick I've ever seen.

Great Job...But (4.00 / 1)
The American people need to be reminded of these 22 Senators who don't support the veterans. This vote should be exploited consistently.

If we just give high fives and slaps on the rear for this victory, the Republicans will still be considered the party that supports our troops when we know the truth....we must spread the truth.

Lieberman? (0.00 / 0)
Hmm.

Funny he should break with the Republican Party now.

And he still claiming to be an Independent Democrat.

Good News ! (0.00 / 0)
I am very happy that both of my Senators from Delaware and my Rep. voted for this.  I wrote to all of them and I'm glad they listened. It is shameful for McCain to say he supports the veterans and then not even show his face for this critical vote.

I will be thinking of you guys and everyone still on the battlegrounds this Memorial Day. Have a good one :-)

Yes! (4.00 / 1)
All that is left to do now is vote these 22 no voters out of office ASAP!
