Obama Comments on the Media's Treatment of General Clark

by: Brandon Friedman

Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 17:50:38 PM EDT

Over the roar of ignorant media pundits and political "strategists" who've managed to twist General Clark's words, Senator Barack Obama has now injected a little sanity into the conversation by rejecting the idea that Clark "swiftboated" anyone.

Obama also claimed that his comments yesterday were not aimed at General Clark.

REPORTER: I wonder what you think about General Clark's comments both Sunday and today, and even further, I'm wondering if you can say if you really think those kinds of comments are much different from the swiftboat types of questions that Senator Kerry faced about his Vietnam experience.

BARACK OBAMA: I don't think that General Clark had the same intent as the swiftboat ads that we saw four years ago.  I don't--I reject that analogy.  But, what I've also said, repeatedly, is that Senator McCain deserves the most-the utmost-honor and respect for his service to our country.  I've said that repeatedly, I've said it all the time.  I noticed that, I think, in at least one publication it was reported that my comments yesterday about Senator McCain were in a response to General Clark.  I think my staff will confirm that was in a draft of that speech that I had written two months ago.  So, I have repeatedly insisted that Senator McCain's service is heroic and that he deserves our respect for that.  Now, I have differences with him on policy.  And I will vigorously debate a lot of the decisions he's made when it comes to national security that I think have weakened our capacity to meet the threats and challenges of the 21st century, but that certainly doesn't detract from his past service to America.

Have to say (4.00 / 1)
I think some politicians, especially smart politicians like Obama, are stupid.

Reason:  They think they have to aim at a moving target.

The media may be a moving target, for revenue reasons, but American voters are not.

I've liked Obama in the primaries.

I will not vote for him.  Period.  Because he has proved himself not to be a person of principle.

Most if not all vets here have had to act on principle.

It's a matter of what does life mean if I do not do what I should do.

Obama is not a veteran and has not had this experience.  His recent voting pattern tells me I can't trust him.

Like I Said (0.00 / 0)
Earlier in another post.

Clark, Edwards and Richardson were my picks, in that order. I'm an Indie and Obama is the one left standing.

Now if Obama royally screws up, I'll vote Nader, if on the ticket, or a write in, It's as simple as that.

Obama may piss off occasionally, but Thank God nobody is perfect, nor does anyone get their perfect candidate.

But McCain, after the banking scandle, wouldn't get my vote for dog catcher, and that was years ago, yet everyone seems to have forgiven him, by the way, the bushie boys made a freakin bundle off of that debacle, especially the one yiou never hear about nor see, even at family gatherings, Neil.

Should add (0.00 / 0)
My main concern, in any federal election, are the local races for the Reps, they are Supposed to keep the Executive In Check, the 109th let this group run wild while not doing a damn thing but corruption and time off, 110th's been playin catchup but are to tied to certain interests!

And you have to follow the money (0.00 / 0)
62% of military campaign cash is going to the Republicans.

As for me, I'll vote for any conservative, Dem or Repub.  We are spending far too much money on entitlements, and the Dems want to spend $1Trillion more over ten years.

Per capita productivity will fall, the dollar will lose more value, and then you can watch gas go to $6 a gallon.

Vote for Vets --
John McCain is a vet, Obama is not.

Conservative???

Hell Define 'Republican'?????

Both political ideologies are Unrecognizable and have been for years!

Any who claim they are of these two Ideologies, and not part of the inner circle using them in recent history, have Kept Their Mouths Shut and Gone Along With The Program, Reason This Country Is Destroying Itself From Within!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just Look Around

By all means keep posting. It makes it much easier to get people to change their registrations to either Independant or even Democratic and their thinking, when they read what those like you write, and like me, an Indie, won't even look at anyone using an (R) after their names.

By the way, don't get your numbers from FOX or the adict, shows what little you know and where you're coming from!

c'mon bro (4.00 / 2)
not voting is like taking the ball and going home in a tantrum, sure it's taking a stand but all it does is screw everyone else over.

As much as I think Obama has lost his spine (and he's really pissing me off right now), we owe it to our children and the world, that McCain is NOT the next President of the United States.

TPMtv: Wes Clark Hyperventorama!

In today's episode of TPMtv, the very best of MSM hyperventilation about Wes Clark's non-demeaning comments about John McCain ...

No one agrees with me (4.00 / 3)
all of the time.  If I want that to happen, then I will have to run for office and win.  Short of that, I need to pick the candidate who stands with me more of the time than the other one.  Obama is far and away the candidate who does that.  Any vet who thinks that John McCain stands with them more often than Obama hasn't looked at McCain's voting record.  McCain opposed the bill just passed and signed by the President for education benefits.  McCain opposed the bill extending dwell time.  Both of these bills were sponsored by Sen. Webb.  Sen. Webb backs Obama.  End of discussion.

Politicians agreeing with me (4.00 / 2)
I am a Conservative, who has two decades of voting Republican.
In 2004, I donated to help fund the Swiftboat Veterans. I became a Life NRA member when I was 18 and that was a big cash sacrifice.

If I compare McCain and Obama, they do tend to agree on many issues, that I deplore as a Conservative.

For the issues that are left, in raw numerical count, I agree with McCain on more issues than Obama.

But after I go through all that, I am not only going to vote for Obama, I am going to open my wallet to help him.

The number one issue for me in 2008, is the health of the United States Army.

McCain, according to Phil Gramm, is going to cut the Department of Defense. Based on McCains history, I have no reason to question that.

As a professional Officer, I am "agnostic" on Iraq as a policy. However, as a Professional I know that the United States Army has been broken because Republicans failed to increase the end strength and to replace equipment.

As a human being who now has served during combat, too many times, it is in my opinion that something is wrong with McCain. He is not all there and I have known guys like that.

That leaves one man standing, Obama.

Besides, the last time the candidate of "hope" won, we had an impressive level of confidence injected into the financial markets, something we need today.
