Is the McCain-Palin Campaign Violating Operational Security?

by: Jon Soltz

When Sarah Palin was announced as John McCain's Vice Presidential pick, I found it a little disturbing that she told the public that her oldest son, Track, would be deploying to Iraq on September 11.  Generally, disclosing the date of deployment is against Operational Security (OPSEC) and illegal.

Calling around to a couple of Public Affairs Officers (PAO) who would be handling the flow of information about Track and his unit, VoteVets.org found out that, first, Track is not deploying on September 11.  He may be part of a deployment ceremony that day, before going to Kuwait, though one Public Affairs Officer said that any details of the upcoming ceremony hadn't been made public yet by the military.

Governor Palin may have spilled the beans on that one, while showing she doesn't know the difference between a soldier deploying to Iraq vs. one preparing to deploy to Iraq.  And while not illegal, if she really did believe that's when he's deploying to Iraq, then she didn't know enough to keep quiet about that to keep from violating OPSEC - something a potential Commander in Chief should know.

But, more disturbing, and definitely in violation of security, are an explosion of stories that say specifically where in Iraq Track is deploying to, which have been dutifully eaten up by right wing websites, and reprinted.  I will not reprint it here, because I would only be compounding the issue.  But, unfortunately, it is very easy to find on the web at this point.

It is simply impossible that any reporter could figure this out on their own.  Just by knowing Track's name and the date he is heading to Kuwait, one could not figure out specifically where Track and his company would be going in Iraq.  There's a reason it's impossible to figure that out - because the military doesn't want that information out there.  It only serves to aid the enemy to know where are troops are moving.

Did the Pentagon release that information to the press?

No, according to another PAO that VoteVets.org talked with.  In fact, this PAO said, the military was actively trying to quash this story, and keep reporters from repeating all these details, because it was a clear OPSEC violation.  The PAO was adamant that the military has no idea how these details got out there and doesn't want them out there.

So where is this information coming from, if not the military?  Certainly not the Obama campaign, which would not gain anything by promoting Track's service.  The only people who I can think of would be those in the McCain-Palin campaign.

If the McCain-Palin campaign has disclosed details about Track's company's movements to gain stories in the press about it, they will have put many American lives in danger - not the least of which would be Track's.

Senator McCain and Governor Palin need to immediately find out if someone in the campaign violated OPSEC by giving a reporter these details, and if they did, the campaign needs to find out where the source got this information from.  Whoever that is, is in it deep.

Yes indeed, a mother says her son is going to Iraq next week.  It doesn't get any lower than that.

That's sarcasm, right? (4.00 / 3)

Oftentimes, seemingly innocuous information can be detrimental to a unit's safety.  For instance, while I was in Baghdad, my unit was tasked as part of Operation Desert Scorpion.  At the same time, AT&T had setup a number of phone trailers right near by that were operated by the locals.  The next thing we know, our Lt. Col is getting questions from families back home about Operation Desert Scorpion and all the stuff that we were doing.  Soldiers had been calling home talking about it on phones that were run by the locals.

This brings me to the Palin situation.  Her son's unit information and deployment dates etc., are protected information for a reason.  Can you imagine the excitement of an insurgent/terrorist group who could claim the life of the son of America's VP?  He would be a trophy on their wall.  Giving out information about him, his unit, and their deployment AO is a danger to him and his unit.  There is a reason they call it "OPSEC".  I'm sure she did not mean any harm in this.  She would never knowingly endanger her own  family.  However, just like those innocent soldiers calling home to brag about Scorpion, this has a real danger to it.  "Be Like Dad, Keep Mum".

Its common sense really in my opinion (4.00 / 1)
Little pieces of information lead to a bigger picture.  All an enemy has to do is put it together.  That is the way my CO explained OPSEC to us.  The name of a unit and its approximate shipout date mentioned here, a flight number heard off hand by a possible member of that unit there and you might have enough to go on.  In fact, if the target is a possible VP's son an enemy may risk it and move on just that information since the VP candidate's son is such an important target.  I totally agree with the military that it needs to quash that story and keep the reporters from talking.  This is just another indication that Palin has no idea about what she is getting into.

Oh come on, Chris.  For Christ's sake, I thought you had more objectivity than this.  (Love your front page stuff though)

The deal is that Palin commented that her son was going to Iraq next week (actually, a pre-deployment function on the 11th, as written).  Suddenly, she's convicted of breaking OPSEC.  Again, as written, some unknown source was responsible for some details of the deployment.  Nevertheless, SHE gets bit with a pitiful article above for simply making a generalized statement.  Our local base paper (weekly, and available to the public) as well as the local TV news outlets always report on deployments to Iraq and Afgh, with pictures of the troops, their wives, etc.  WTF?

This whole thing is indicative of a paranoid, vicious, and hatefully partisan bunch of goons who live for nothing more than their left-wing perversions.  Friedman would have an orgasm of fitful pleasure if Obama related to us that his (hypothetical) daughter is going to Iraq next week.  You know that and I know that.

And yes, I understand about OPSEC -- I had 30 years of it, had a Top Secret and SCI clearance for many years.

Bottom line again: I have no chance of using logic or substantiated info here to make my point because it would be discarded.  My ingredients must be an agenda devoted to destroying a good person solely because he or she is of another political mindset.  This site is full of this shit, and you're smart enough know it.  If you and I had a beer together and talked like real people, you would probably even admit it.

OK, yeah, I could argue either side of this easily.  On the one side, if Obama did the same thing, you and I both know that Redstate would crucify him.  On the other hand, she should have aired on the side of caution.  It's a catch-22.

But, as I've said before - arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics.  Even if you win, you still look retarded.

You've really gotta Expand that world you live in!!

Just a thought for you to chew on,

Apparently you support this ticket and as such She, Hubby and friends are right up to your standards, are not Only Isolationists but  Secessionists, with the Goals of total lack of knowledge of the World to Continue Creating Hatreds and Enemies Of Us and Our Country!!!!!!

But my Disgust , at present outside of the lack of knowledge on the world stage is  using her 4 month old 'Special Needs Child' as a
Political Tool, not even Holding and Bonding with, from either one,
leaving that to the daughters and anyone else nearby!!!!

The big difference here is (4.00 / 2)
the fact that reporters along with many other people violate OPSEC all of the time because most of them know no better.  That has always been the case and the best that can be hoped for is to ensure that the lid remains sealed on any classified information they may obtain.  Palin however, is running for the Vice Presidency of the United States and will have direct access to classified information.  She, just like all other high level people that access classified information are held to higher standards in regards to OPSEC and it appears at least for now that she can not handle it.   She committed a very novice mistake for a high level political and it shows.

One More Time.... (0.00 / 0)
mettycat, at the risk of repeating myself, Palin did not provide any details other than simply stating the fact of her son's imminent deployment to Iraq.  See my original message.  That in itself is not an OPSEC violation.  Don't you think the DNC would be all over this if there were any merit to a VP candidate initiating a security violation?  At another risk of showing my medals, let me say that I've taken dozens of OPSEC, COMSEC, Two-Man-Policy, and oodles of other courses and tests over the years: HER general statement was not an OPSEC violation!  But it can be manufactured into one, by anyone with an agenda.

Anyway, thanks for writing and for your honest concern over security -- it's the real deal.

Speaking of security, can I tell you about the time I was spread-eagled on the concrete after reaching into my pocket for cigarettes and.........  Oooops, sorry....

Continueto defend her all you want (0.00 / 0)
but it will make no difference.  Palin has no national security experience and every mistake she makes in that regard will be amplified.   Besides, this is no run average unit we are talking about here.  That particular unit, as stated has her son as a member of it.  Every word she says regarding that unit will be listened to very closely.  Its simple common sense and Palin would be wise to be more careful in the future.

Saw a Beau Biden interview after Joe was nominated... (4.00 / 1)
the reporter got to a question about Beau's impending deployment.

From my recall, Beau ducked the question saying he had 3 things on his mind:
Being the best father, family man he could be
Being the best AG for Delaware he could be
Getting Obama-Biden, DEMs elected

When pressed he said that one thing he had learned was to not plan that far ahead, because things have a way of changing.

My thought would be that if Joe were elected would Beau not go? Or that you just don't talk and was politely deflecting the question.

Obviously, Sarah doesn't have street creds as a MilMom, let alone as CiC of the ARNG-AK yet...

That using 9-11, 9-11, 9-11, 9-11, 9-11 in a campaign is the game for her.

If we haven't realized by now, our neocon GOP politicians have not yet stopped going to the 9/11 well.  They are still attempting to deceive us by implying that our illegal occupation of Iraq actually is doing something effective for US security.  It's all part of the smoke & mirrors and lies & bullshit our media and government feed US.

SEALs should not have been recognized at RNC

The men were acknowledged from the podium at the Xcel Energy Center Wednesday evening by Orson Swindle, a former POW cellmate of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who pointed them out and asked them to stand.

They did so, but appeared to be visibly uncomfortable.

The men, wearing civilian clothes, had been given permission to attend the St. Paul, Minnesota, event to support the family of their close friend and fellow SEAL Michael Mansoor, who was killed in action in Iraq, said Navy spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis.

There are very strict rules about active duty military personnel not attending political events or appearing to publicly support candidates.

The men, Lt. Leif Babin and Special Warfare Operator First Class Tom Deshazo, were legally on leave and had been granted permission to go to the convention as long as they were not in uniform and refrained from all public or media statements, Davis explained.

They were only allowed to escort the sister of Mansoor, who had asked them to be there for emotional support, the spokesman said.

Swindles attached to the 'swifties', and none of them, the few they are, actually Think before they open their mouths!!!
