McCain Overstretches his Support of Veterans and Troops

by: Brian McGough

Sat Sep 27, 2008 at 00:05:21 AM EDT

In tonight's debate John McCain said "I know the veterans, I know them well, and I know that they know that I'll take care of them, and I have been proud of their support and their recognition of my service to the veterans, and I love them, and I'll take care of them, and they know that I'll take care of them."

Truth be told, this is not the case.  McCain has a lackluster voting record when it comes to veterans' issues, and America's veterans know it.  The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America have given McCain a grade of "D" when it comes to voting in their interest.  The Disabled American Veterans have given McCain a 20 percent rating when it comes to voting in the interest of disabled veterans.

More after the fold. . . .

Brian McGough :: McCain Overstretches his Support of Veterans and Troops
McCain has voted 29 times against veterans' medical benefits.  In April 2006, McCain joined only 13 other senators in voting against an amendment that would increase funding for the VA to provide outpatient care and treatment.  Earlier that year, McCain voted against increasing funding for military and veterans' hospitals.  This was money that could have been used to fix the problems at Walter Reed before it became a national disgrace.

McCain was a staunch opponent of the bipartisan Webb/Hagel GI Bill.  This bill would have provided better educational opportunities to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  McCain called this bill "too generous" and tried to introduce his own watered down bill.  McCain didn't even bother to show up to vote for the bill.  After it passed the two staunchest opponents of the GI Bill, President Bush and John McCain, tried to take credit for its passage.

McCain has an equally bad record when it comes to supporting our active duty soldiers.  McCain opposed the Webb/Hagel Dwell time amendment.  This amendment would have ensured that for every day troops were deployed, they would spend one day at home.  This time would have allowed troops to decompress from combat stress and to focus on maintaining the equipment necessary to fight a war.  Our troops and equipment are now dangerously overstretched.

McCain opposed the Bayh amendment that would have provided $360 million for the procurement of up-armored humvees at a time when roadside bombs were killing American troops.

McCain voted to kill the Reed Amendment. This amendment would have begun to increase the size of the active army in 2003 and focused on stability operations.

McCain voted against the Dodd amendment that would provide an additional $320 million in protective gear for our troops in harms way.

McCain also voted against a Landrieu amendment that would have given our National Guard and Reserve troops the equipment they needed to survive on the battlefield.

There is a distinct pattern in these votes, and that pattern shows that John McCain is no friend to veterans on Capitol Hill.  He may say all he wants that he is, but that doesn't change the fact that he votes time and time again against the needs of veterans and active duty soldiers.

Tough Love for the Vets (4.00 / 1)
He loves the troops and veterans so much that he thinks that they should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, that is if they are lucky enough not to have lost their legs.  It's Daddy Mac's tough love approach.

McCain, you are a DISGRACE to this country and to our veterans. How dare you use their names, their sacrifices in VAIN.

DISGRACE (4.00 / 1)
McCain's time has come and gone.  He may have served time in a POW camp.  Fine.  He's not fit to be our president.

He is now a disgrace.

This doesn't belong in a blog, it belongs in a 30 second attack ad against jon mccain focusing on his voting record in relation to vet. It's time to kick the bastard where it counts, where he's strong. It's time for "Senator george allen voted against this, and now it's time to vote against him." only, ala mccain.

Not many people read votevets. You're The ONLY people though that can attack a "sitting war hero." and not be destroyed in return. I think it's incumbent upon you to do such. so please, please, please, show some courage. You're soldiers: that's what you're supposed to be all about!

We older Vets can Help but you folks are living the Present that though Resembles the past, it's Your Words and Thoughts that Count, Especially with the words of False 'Support' that have been used since the beginning!!

But actions, words, and thoughts have to come Quickly before the small handful like 'vets for freedom', or whatever they call themselves get out of the gate, they can be corrected but for some their words will be followed. Reason Kerry didn't come back on the 'swifties' like he should have, and some of us didn't neither, couldn't believe people would actually believe them, especially the great majority who don't serve and 'verbally spit' on us, the majority who aren't 'swifties' all these years!!!

But for the life of me I can't understand why, especially Barack as Presidential Candidate, nobody brings up the 109th Congress!!

All one needs to do is remind that as the Totally Republican Controlled Government were beating the War Drums louder and louder, calling anyone who opposed their aggressive style and extremely weak excuses for invading Iraq Unpatriotic, Enemy Sympathizers , you name it they used it that Not One Of Them Mentioned Military, especially, nor Veterans Care or the VA Budgets. Many of us older Vets saw what many of you, and your brothers and sisters, are now experiencing coming, yet Nobody Cared. Than when the equipment problems arose they in unison pooh poohed any rush funding or oversite and investigations>

Some would say that the Dems were complicent to all that, but those that would forget that the Dems were Blocked Over and Over from even having or demanding Hearings.

You could go on and on, but the bottom line is Everyone Running for Federal Office should be Bringing Up that Total Control and Non-Want to Pay Attention To What The Results Of Their Aggressive Policies of Wars of Choice were going to bring!!

McCain's history in MIA/POW affairs (4.00 / 1)
I think it's despicable how John McCain can just detach himself from our veterans and troops.  I recently did some research on his behavior against the families of MIAs and POWs, who only wanted the federal government to help them to bring their loved ones home from Indochina.  Dead or alive, they just wanted to know what happened to bring some closure or retrieve them. John McCain was the lead ringer in a trumped up committee that was suppose to handle the MIA/POW affairs. I was appalled at how he antagonized these people, who were also instrumental in bringing him home. The National Alliance of Families went before this "committee" beseeching the release of classified records, crucial in solving the mystery of the MIAs. I implore you all to do some research. There are also some videos on You Tube, as well.

This debate was origninally billed as "Foreign Policy"... (4.00 / 1)
McCain threw in the emotional "I am the friend of the Vet" thing at the very end when there was no chance for rebuttal. Gotta think that this was a very well "planned" volley.

Seems to me that he switched from noun-verb-POW to this line of BS.

It will totally distracted from his long history of refighting his Vietnam war. You know he told us how it feels to fight a 'losing' war.

The foreign policy debate should have been on the long history of the McCain-GOP using a policy that has failed. Sanctions, sanctions, sanctions and selective arms sales. It has ruined economies of fragile nations that gives extremists-terrorists fertile ground. This includes Pakistan.

And his BS on the success of the Surge citing "Iraq is going to have elections" that went unchallenged. No PSA, no resolution of deBaathification, failed-budget busting reconstruction, ethnic cleansing, Bremer Walls, Kuwait pissed off because of the US arms sales to Iraq, Turkey still attacking separatist Kurds... and that election is not a done deal with the Kirkuk issue still not settled. Besides they were scheduled for Oct. 1, 2008. Now, we have a maybe of by the end of the year.

Biden on MSNBC last night had more impact. (0.00 / 0)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21...

Politically, one needs to separate what is said at a stump speech rallying the base and how one appeals to indies and undecideds in a nationally televised debate.

Looking to the VP debates, I really hope that Joe justs baits Armageddon Sarah into running her clap-trapper and hanging herself. Just keep asking her questions as she just loves to do a bunch of splainin'. Joe doesn't need to hit her over the head with the shovel, he just needs to keep handing it to her, letting her dig her own hole deeper.

[ Parent ]
That's the thing about Biden... (4.00 / 1)
...his stump speeches are not political in the sense of rallying the base etc. etc....and there is not a cynical bone in his body. That's why I think so many people just don't get what Joe Biden is all about - they see him through a thick lens of cynicism.

Don't get me wrong, though...I'm as cynical as the next person...with very good reason! But, I can tell the real deal when I see it and Joe Biden, for as long as I have been following his career, has proven that he is the absolute real deal...whether he is on the stump, in the Senate, or talking to a audience who are decidedly not the base!

In other words, there is only one Joe Biden - what you see is what you get, no matter the circimstances. I can't think of many who are more honest, candid, and straightforward and who simply tells the people what they NEED to hear.

As for the VP debate, I'm still not convinced that it will actually happen. But, if it does...oh,man...hold on to your hats!

Actually, I thought that Obama did with "the you were wrong" (4.00 / 2)
litany pretty well and other times hit fairly subtly.

Also, I look at Obama and see someone who is able to go forward with diplomacy and consensus building. While I see McBristle as a my way or the highway "Bomberann". The Obama personality is what we need to get our whole international act back together and regain a position of strength.

Two things that I wish Obama would have mentioned more was that "Earmarks" are a fart in a whirlwind of GOP over-spending and McDeregulator with failure to fund and staff regulatory agencies are at the heart of the problem along with his Grammawhiner economic philosophy.

But time was of essence.

[ Parent ]
I think Obama did a good job (4.00 / 2)
especially on foreign policy.  He continued to link the problems the continued Iraq conflict has created for the U.S. military to other operations that the U.S. military is currently involved in.  This needed to be done.  McCain always tries to give the appearance that Iraq has no effect on the U.S. military's capablility to respond to other threats such as in Afghanistan but we all know that it does.  Because of this, McCain came off as oblivious to other real or potential threats to U.S. interests that the military may have to deal with.  Obama did a great job in framing McCain as being totally fixed on Iraq and it showed.

Liar, liar pants on fire, McCain (0.00 / 0)
I was so upset last night during the debate when it turned to our soliders and vets and to hear all the lies McCain dared to tell. If America votes for him, they deserve him. My intention is out there for Senator Obama to win.  He seems sincere and gets it re: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc., etc.  When he brought up the POW thing at the end I wanted to scream out the number of dead and wounded from our CURRENT WARS.

I have to believe that something extraordinary is possible. (Mrs. John Nash)

McCain's pandering about veterans was disgusting (4.00 / 4)
After watching John McCain in the last night's debate pander about how much he cared about veterans, I found his statements so disingenuous I decided to put together this video highlighting the hypocrisy of his words.

McCain distortions about his support for vets (0.00 / 0)
I'm livid about the distortions John McCain made last night in the first Presidential debate about his "support" for veterans.  I put my thoughts on my blog and added your post to do what I can to get the word out about this very disingenuous candidate, John McCain.  I'm not a veteran.  As a former professional trumpet player, I've played Taps at too many military ceremonies honoring the supreme sacrifice of our fine men and women.  No one should dishonor our vets.  No one.  Thank you for all you do.  I salute you and offer you my thanks.
