John Murtha

Congressman and Vietnam veteran John Murtha (D-PA) is often referred to as an "ex-Marine" by right-wing extremists for his stance on the Iraq War.  Recently, he's also been taking some heat for suggesting that rural America has lots of racists.  (Who knew?)  Anyway, I figured I'd post this clip from last year in case there was any question in anyone's mind about whose side Murtha is on.

He's responding a joke John McCain made about IEDs:

Murtha was a Marine with the 34th Special Infantry Company (4.00 / 4)
in Vietnam 1966-67.  He received the Bronze Star with Valor, 2 Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.

"No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided." - Barack Obama

In other words, he know what he's talking about (0.00 / 0)
For all his military experience, McCain doesn't--or won't.

Thanks for posting this, Brandon (4.00 / 1)
I had not seen it before.  How is it that McCain gets away with this kind of "humor"?  I guarantee that if Obama had made any sort of comment like this, he would have been crucified, and his bid for the Democratic nomination would have been over.  It seems like McCain gets a pass for screwing over veterans and military families because he is a veteran.  I don't get it.

We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America. -Barack Obama

Like Tom DeLay with his gerrymandering of drawing up Congressional (4.00 / 1)
Districts didn't use 'race' as a measure to establish GOP 'safe' seats.

My neighbor, a WWII vet, will agree with me right down the line on issues, but he will end the conversation with "I won't vote for that N...."

I'm retired in a totally 'racist' part of the USA. Blacks = 0000.4% of the population. It is so totally GOP and would still be using Sundown laws if they could get away from it. Since they can't, they just use 'peer pressure'.

At first I really didn't notice it until one Sunday in church a black family came... A church that was big on meet and greet suddenly became filled with cold shoulders...

Alabama in Pennsylvania (4.00 / 1)
I grew up in central PA, east of Murtha's 12th Congressional District. Someone once remarked that Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and the surrounding suburban areas were reasonably liberal and Democratic but that the area in between could mostly be classified as "Alabama north of the Mason-Dixon line". If you talk to people there, the ones who like to sound reasonable and progressive will give you all sorts of reasons why they are not going to vote for Obama that are not, on the surface at least, racist. If you dig a bit, tho, you get to the real reason: They don't want a goddamn N* in the Whitehouse.

Racism and bigotry (4.00 / 3)
Racism and bigotry are unfortunately still alive and well in America.  It's disgusting, disturbing, and saddening.  We are supposed to be better than that.  My 24+ years of serving in America's military have shown me that there is NO place for bigotry and racial intolerance.

Peace...

Whoever it is... (4.00 / 3)
...calling Murtha an "ex-Marine" hasn't ever met a Marine.

I have a friend in Veterans for Peace-- (0.00 / 0)
a Marine Corps Vietnam combat vet--who calls himself a "recovering" Marine.
