It's a great night for veterans: The Senate voted unanimously to confirm Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth to serve as an Assistant Secretary in the Department of Veterans Affairs on Wednesday evening.

Jon Soltz, Chairman of VoteVets.org, had this to say:

"Tammy is going to be an exceptional addition to the Department of Veterans Affairs. We now have one of our own -- a veteran of the wars we're now in -- in a top administration position. Tammy also has personal experience with the Department -- both as a patient, and as the veterans affairs chief in Illinois. Her experiences from the battlefield to the homefront are going to add a much-needed perspective at the Department.

"It's been a personal pleasure for me and the veterans we represent to deal with Tammy since she first entered public life in 2006. Tammy is one of the smartest, sharpest, and most caring people you could ever meet. We're incredibly happy for her, and look forward to continuing to work with her in the years to come."

We're all proud of the work Tammy has done on behalf of veterans and we look forward to helping her reach out to vets across the country.

Yes, congrats and best wishes to Tammy. (4.00 / 1)
Also, Christopher Hill nomination's to the post of Ambassador to Iraq was confirmed 73-23. This is also good news.

Duckworth is great news. (0.00 / 0)
She should really do some good things regarding fixing the VA. On the other hand, I am not so sure about Hill being good news. No real experience in the Middle East and no Arabic language skills, from as far as I can tell.

Thought you would be thrilled that they are appointing someone (0.00 / 0)
who hasn't built his career on kissin' Saudi arze while hanging out with the likes of Chalabi. Seems to me that those at the diplomatic level in the ME are pretty skilled in English.

We certainly (0.00 / 0)
could have done alot worse than Christopher Hill(Chas Freeman comes to mind) and the not kissing Saudi ass is an absoltely great thing. The absolute last thing we need is someone working for Saudi Arabia's interests in Iraq. But on the other hand, Arab politics truly are a different animal and the Arab diplomats may take advantage of the fact that they know our language and we don't know theirs. But only time will tell.

Chris Hill (0.00 / 0)
IMHO is one of our best and most successful diplomats. Far more important than fluency in Arabic are his experiences working with multi-nation coalitions to resolve delicate, highly charged international security issues. He worked with Holbrooke and Clark on ending the war in Bosnia and more recently on North Korea. Hill is a great pick. And of course, I'm thrilled about Duckworth.

Now let her get to work, along with the rest, an Awful Lot of Fixin the Mess Left to clean up!!
