WAR VETERANS CALL FOR SENATE TO PASS CLEAN ENERGY BILL IN NEW TELEVISION AD CAMPAIGN

"It's not just a question of American Energy; It's a question of American Power"

Veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are launching a new television ad campaign, both nationally and in a number of states, aimed at getting the Senate to pass a clean energy and climate bill.  The ad, from VoteVets.org, coincides with a growing movement by veterans and security groups making a push on Capitol Hill to get a bill passed and on to the President for his signature.

The national version of the ad can be viewed here:

Douglas Peters; Detroit, Michigan: I've seen first-hand how America's dependence on foreign oil threatens our national security.

Philip Gilfus; Fayetteville, North Carolina:  Billions in oil profits finding their way....

Terron Sims, Jr.; Arlington, Virginia: ... to the terrorists we're fighting against.

Jackie Rodgers, Jr.; Paris, Missouri:  That's why Washington needs to pass Clean Energy legislation.  It will create good jobs...

"1.7 million new American jobs" appears on the screen, above footage of "green energy" workers

"Reduce Carbon Pollution" appears on the screen, above a smoke stack

Philip Gilfus:  Cut carbon pollution....

Terron Sims, Jr.:  Stop sending our dollars overseas to be used against us.

Philip Gilfus:  Call our Senators, tell them to pass the clean energy bill.

"Tell Congress: Pass Clean American Energy, 202-224-3121" appears on the screen

Douglas  Peters: It's not just a question of American Energy....

Terron Sims, Jr.:  ....It's a question of American Power.

Versions of the ad will also run in Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia and Missouri.  The script of the ad is below. This is the fourth ad on Clean Energy from VoteVets.org.

"This is part of a growing consensus from veterans and security experts from the left and right that we absolutely have to break our dependence on foreign oil - particularly Middle East oil," said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran, and Chairman of VoteVets.org.  "Passage of legislation is too important for us to stay silent.  Essentially funding both sides of the wars we're fighting is unsustainable and dangerous. We're going to do whatever it takes to pass this bill and help protect our troops, and America."

Indeed, momentum is growing among veterans and security groups.  That momentum is quickening following reports last month that the Pentagon has begun war gaming effects of global climate change.  Those simulations found that American forces would be under tremendous strain to deal with all the effects at home and around the world, hampering their ability to deal with manmade crises.

Under the umbrella of a new coalition - Operation Free - a number of veterans and security groups are heading to Capitol Hill this week to push for passage of the clean energy bill.  VoteVets.org is part of Operation Free.

That's a very effective ad. (0.00 / 0)
I hope it will be posted far and wide with links back to VoteVets' donation page.

I just had a thought...are there any coalitions between VoteVets and any Canadian veterans' organizations? The reason I ask is that, as foreign nationals, we can't get behind efforts like this with financial contributions. Would some sort of coalition solve that problem and help to increase the donations?

After all, we are all in this together!

This needs to be prioritized properly (0.00 / 0)
We need to

1. Get off of Saudi oil

2. Get off of all foreign oil

3. Get off of all oil

Sorry, but this particular bill seems like another one of those Kennedy School of Government solutions. Of course, I am all for getting off Saudi oil but we should be pursuing new energy solutions and domestic drilling at the same time. We should also be pursuing all forms of new energy solutions and given the government's track record over the past 18 years regarding the Saudis, I am very skeptical of this proposition, especially given that this is in effect, a top-down solution that would give the Federal Government more power, would it not? The Federal Government is responsible for our current relationship with Saudi Arabia, why should I entrust them with more power to fix it?

Of course the part regarding the Russians claims on the North Pole was rather interesting. If we were so concerned with such a thing happening, then why did we sit back and let such a thing happen? That and I would not put Putin in the evil dictator category with the Saudis and the Iranians.

You don't have to worry about the Russians in the North Pole. (0.00 / 0)
We'll take care of them! :)

Your points about the Saudis and their crude were bang on, as per usual.

I think it may take a very, very, very catastrophic event to change the US-Saudi relationship. I mean, if 9/11 didn't suffice, I really shudder to think what will.

This bill is at least an adequate start, isn't it?

It may be thinking in the right direction (0.00 / 0)
but I think alot of the excessive regulations need to be cut out and thrown away. The bill also struck me as granting the Federal Government far too much discretion and would appear to be way too far sighted.  This needs to be taken one step at a time in a rather simple manner:

The first thing we could do is enact more stringent MPG requirements on all cars made in the US.

Second, would be to provide positive incentives for investing in clean energy(IE: Tax Breaks) We should also be investing in more projects such as nuclear power.

Third would be to allow and encourage more domestic drilling in the US, as well as taking steps to discourage imports from certain nations.

Of course, we should also not let those politicians in Washington DC off the hook here. If they are going to lecture the rest of us on clean energy, they had better start leading by example.

You Really gotta change that flavor of 'koolaid', it's getting Real Old, parroting over and over..................!!

If you're going to keep trying to argue some wacky point get  the Facts, All Of Them, and who really controls the Saudi Oil, it's coming from the oil power here in this country, who the hell do you think  plays with the costs at the pump, son!!

The same folks who brought us bin Laden, oh and Saddam as well!!

No (0.00 / 0)
the Saudis control the oil and it was the Saudis who gave us bin Laden. Besides, Saddam was a self made man whom played everybody for his own benefit. It's hardly accurate to say we bred the guy.

Just to be clear, it was largely the Saudis whom ran the price of oil up to $150 dollars per barrel and seem to be in control of oil prices right now. They also run what is probably the most powerful foreign lobby in DC and we sure didn't stop them from cutting off our oil back in the 1970s now, did we?

I'd argue (0.00 / 0)
AIPAC has more pull than any Saudi lobby.

Green is good, but...... (0.00 / 0)
We are NOT going to lessen our need for oil, and lots of it, in the foreseeable future.

These conferences are good -- they keep the notion of clean energy alive.  But clean energy and a willingness to snip ourselves off foreign oil will not fully address the problem we face now: we're unwilling to become self-sufficient.  That means drilling for oil on U.S. territory, then drill some more, and save it for future generations.  Government subsidies could ensure control of that resource.

Ridding ourselves of dependence from oil is a somewhat bogus argument.  We'll ALWAYS need oil for farming, clothing, the military, tires on "green cars," and a zillion other things not including gasoline for cars.  And ridding ourselves from dependence from foreign oil won't happen until we drill our own!  But damn, we can't have that because that just "might" disrupt Caribou migration on the North Slope.

Of course, nuclear, wind, and solar energy solutions are fine, but those too are nixed largely by the NIMBY types, and they win many battles.  So we stalemate ourselves, while Russia and other oil giants drill and will soon control our lifestyle.  All this happens while we talk, and talk, and talk some more.

With a powerful message, passed along on down the line, hope it brings results!!

Can Newt Gingrich break dance?? (0.00 / 0)
Oil-loving members of Congress like John Boehner and Michele Bachmann and talking heads like Glenn Beck and Newt Gingrich are dancing hand-in-hand with Big Oil. Who do you think is the best at doing Big Oil's dirty work?
