Karzai's Brother on CIA Payroll?

That's what the New York Times is reporting:

KABUL, Afghanistan - Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a suspected player in the country's booming illegal opium trade, gets regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, and has for much of the past eight years, according to current and former American officials.

The agency pays Mr. Karzai for a variety of services, including helping to recruit an Afghan paramilitary force that operates at the C.I.A.'s direction in and around the southern city of Kandahar, Mr. Karzai's home.

The whole article is really a fascinating read. My real question here is what impacts this has on the Afghan elections. Will Hamid Karzai be seen more as a U.S. puppet than he already is? If he wins the runoff anyway, will his government be seen as legitimate? Of course, locals tend to know more about our "covert" operations in their AO than we do, so there is a very likely possibility that this was already common knowledge west of the Durand Line.

Jane Mayer has an article in The New Yorker about the CIA use of drones [assassination] v. DoD use of drones [legal act of war]. You can't get the article without being a subscriber, but here is some stuff about it with an embedded video interview:

This article seems to be based on military 'leaks'. I've been reading about some speaking out about the lack of cooperation/ a real central command in Afghanistan. It also seems like recent KIAs in Afghanistan can be linked to the fight against heroin. Just sayin'.

As to the election the Taliban has already said they will disrupt those. Looks like it might have started in Kabul with a Taliban attack on an UN Guesthouse:

Saddam was, and they helped install him into power after a few coups as well as sullying him with intelligence and chem/bio weapons because Iran were using them in the Iran/Iraq conflict.

bin Laden was especially as the middle man in the arms dealing during the Afghan/Soviet debacle, stinger anyone, and so many more!

History just keeps repeating itself as we went through this years back, they and our foreign policies have continually damaged our National Security as to our citizens and the country for decades with what they do "In Our Names!" secretly, creating those that then seek "Blowback" from our failed policies!!

Remember who held the power in Congress during these latest years, as they weren't doing congressional investigations, hardly any oversight, and if they knew anything weren't stopping it, as well as the extremely lax carrying out of the regulations and laws already on the books, and soooo much more that wasn't done!!

House probe of CIA briefings moves to hearing stage

The House Intelligence Committee has launched a series of hearings as part of its investigation into whether U.S. intelligence agencies broke the law by failing to inform Congress of covert activities.

But a significant internal dispute on the committee surfaced Thursday, with Democrats and Republicans clashing over the scope and direction of the investigation.

Republicans claim they were not adequately consulted about the scope and direction of the investigation.

They should already know as they were in the Control of the Congress when All This Was Going Down and No One can say they didn't know about any of it!!!

I have to wonder how much of this same thing (0.00 / 0)
has gone on in Iraq as well.
