Rogue Policeman Kills 5 Brits, Taliban Claims Responsibily

This is not good:

British defense officials say five British soldiers have been shot dead by an Afghan police officer in southern Helmand Province.

Officials say the incident occurred Tuesday when the gunman fired on the troops without warning at a police checkpoint and then fled. A joint statement from NATO and the Afghan interior ministry said six other British troops and two Afghan police were wounded in the incident.

Bloomberg reports that responsibility for the attack was claimed by the Taliban.

I don't know how to place this in the context of the overall counterinsurgency effort. Surely, you can't take one incident and use it as a point of argument that the entire effort is failing. However, it certainly isn't good that we are having trouble gaining the trust of our partners when that is essential to achieving the goal of gaining the trust of the population.

So what does COIN doctrine have to say about this? What's the answer? Do we need to work to develop more trust with our partners who will eventually work to purge their own ranks of insurgents? Or is this just an isolated incident that is, however tragic, to be expected in a counterinsurgency campaign?

Rcihard, this article may contain some "context" about the ANP. (0.00 / 0)
They are trained by contractors. The Brits claim that 60% of the ANP are drug addicted.

The article claims that the "force" is made up of "circulating members". They go through basic training, collect their pay and return home with the freebies [guns, etc]. They wait awhile and return to 'enlist' again under another name to start basic again. Obviously, there is no security clearance process for the trainees.

Here's the article:

Also mentioned in the article is the "sodomizing of boys". Will add this link about "bacha bazi":

The ANP are being trained as a paramilitary force... (0.00 / 0)
...and, the Afghan people are, apparently, more afraid of them than they are of the Taliban.

The ANP are rife with corruption and brutality.

I think any reading of COIN doctrine would suggest that an escalation of troops into Afghanistan would be most decidedly counterproductive. In fact, it appears to be high time to be thinking about a responsible withdrawal of troops and a more focused and limited CT approach in combination with a diplomatic/political/economic effort to promote an Afghan-led process for political reconciliation that respects traditional Afghan power structures and that does not depend on a strong central government in Kabu.

IS FOX NEWS WORKING FOR ISRAEL AGAINST AMERICA?

FOX/MURDOCH/ISRAELI POLICY TO KEEP US IN AFGHANISTAN NOT VERY "PRO AMERICAN"

Fox News is using retired military officers surrounded by uniformed active duty troops in an attempt to derail debate on disengagement in Afghanistan.  After 8 years, the US is heading the same way Russia did, the more troops we send, the more die.  Absolutely nothing has been accomplished in 8 years in Afghanistan other than to start a major war in Pakistan too.  I understand Fox News.  They are controlled by the powerful Israeli spokeman, Rupert Murdoch.  Israel wants this war to go on forever.  Though Murdoch now is an American citizen, it doesn't seem to have "taken."

What is good for Israel isn't always good for the US...>>>
