VETERANS BLAST INHOFE HYPOCRISY ON GITMO

Call on Inhofe to stand with real conservatives

Washington, DC - The largest progressive group of veterans in America, VoteVets.org, today called out Senator James Inhofe on his hypocrisy on Guantanamo Bay.  Senator Inhofe is sponsoring an amendment today to the Defense Appropriations bill to block the transfer of detainees to face trial in the U.S., despite staying quiet when a Republican president did it.

Jon Soltz, an Iraq war veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org said:

"Nearly 200 terrorists were tried and convicted in U.S. courts, most notably Zacharias Moussavi who was brought to the U.S. by President George W. Bush.  All the while, Senator Inhofe was quiet.  Playing politics with security like this is a disgrace.  For the safety of our troops and security of America, we need to begin the process of having those responsible for 9/11 face American justice, and rob al-Qaeda of the Guantanamo recruiting poster.  Senator Inhofe must step aside and drop the games.

"What does it say to the people of Afghanistan that when our troops are trying to help establish the rule of law, our own Senate is considering tossing aside our own laws and ideals?

"True conservatives are on our side.  Real conservatives like Bob Barr, Grover Norquist, and David Keene all agree that it's time for the Republican party to stop the fear mongering and do what's right for America.  If Inhofe was a genuine conservative, he'd do the same.  But, he's not.  He's just another politics-playing hypocrite."

Inhofe's amendment can be found here.

VoteVets.org is a partner group in the Campaign to Close Guantanamo, found at www.closegitmonow.org VoteVets.org is the leading progressive, pro-military organization of veterans, dedicated to the destruction of terror networks around the world, with force when necessary. It primarily focuses on education and advocacy on issues of importance to the troops and veterans, and holding politicians accountable for their actions on these issues.

I have said (0.00 / 0)
it before and I will say it again. If Military Tribunals were good enough for the Japanese, then they are good enough for al Qaida and Co.

Besides, AQ and Co. do not deserve American justice in civilian criminal courts. Hearing this constant talk about American justice vaguely sounds like Globocop biz rhetoric to me. Maybe that's just me on that part though.

What makes you think these guys are Al Qaeda? (0.00 / 0)
There have been a couple hundred released already because they had no official ties to any terror group.  Believe it or not, someone can come from Saudi, Yemen, or China and not be connected to Al-Qaeda in any way.  I am from Louisiana.  Does that mean I was part of the KKK?

The fact is that in many of these cases we simply don't have all the information.  But there is one fact that is pointed out in the article above.  No one had any problem with this being done over and over when a republican was president.  Now that Obama is in the White House everything has changed.  That is a fact.

It would be much easier to just shoot all of them.  Including the ones that have already been released by a federal judge, but that are still being held.  But that is not the type of country we are.  We tried them in civilian courts when Bush was president.  Why should we change that now?

"No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided." - Barack Obama

What's it matter (0.00 / 0)
if they technically were or were not al Qaida. Most of the Wahhabi jihadis groups out there are not technically al Qaida. At the same end, we simply do not have a list of everyone whom is in al Qaida either. Nor do we have a list of every single Wahhabi jihadi group that exists.

The thing about the nationalities is most of these guys were caught in Afg/Pak. Large numbers of Yemenis and Saudi MAMs in a region not known for having a large Arab population should raise red flags right away, especially given the fact that Saudis and Yemenis tend to make up the Lion's share of AQ and Co.

You are correct. We don't have all the information on the Saudis or Yemenis that were in GITMO. That said, would we put it past the Saudis or the Yemenis to withhold or pass false information on the individuals in question? The Saudis and Yemenis aren't exactly on the same side as we are in the current war.

Honestly, I wasn't a fan of trying them in civilian courts under Bush either. I thought it was an absolutely ridiculous idea and still do, especially given that we are already planning to try some of those detainees in tribunals.

Why should we change it? Good question. I'd say because we decided that military tribunals were good enough for the Japanese in World War II and it's the last war we ever won.

I'll put it this way (0.00 / 0)
By and large, AQ is getting more legal rights and privileges than the Taliban through this arrangement, which is more than just a little insane if you ask me.

Good on Jon for standing up and speaking out. (0.00 / 0)
"There is no global warming" Inhofe is a total obstructionist.

The worst I heard yesterday was Sen Cornyn, a former TX judge who said that we shouldn't try them in Federal Court because US judges don't have enough power. I really need to turn off the TV 'cause every stupid is screeching about this only interrupted by the Quitter from Wasilla debate.

And the I-dots that think that if they move Gitmo detainees to IL, Chicago will be the next target with AQ flying in and out of O'Hare to visit. Hello, for starters the detainees don't/won't have visitation privileges. Nevermind that Thomson, IL wants them to help fill an almost empty high security prison bringing  much needed jobs to the area.
