Inhofe Attacks Generals who Favor Energy Security

Back in August when Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi wrote on op-ed stating that suppressing free speech is un-American, conservatives somehow found a way to mangle their words into an issue over which they could feign outrage. Likewise, for nearly eight years during the last Administration, anytime national security policy was questioned, and we've since learned that there was much to be questioned in those policies, the questioners were bombarded with attacks accusing them of troop-hating and support for terrorism.

But let a Republican Senator, who is just shy of believing the earth if flat, accuse retired flag grade officers of being camera whores, and no one in their party or the traditional media bats an eye-lash:

NYT: Senator Boxer is chairwoman of the Environment and Public Works Committee,on which you are the ranking Republican. She and her fellow Democrats have lately suggested that global warming could be a threat to national security by destabilizing developing countries.

INHOFE: That's the most ludicrous thing. They looked around and they found, I think, five generals to testify before the committee. Well, that's 5 generals out of 4,000 retired generals that say that. There are a lot of generals who don't like to be out of the limelight. They'd like to get back in.

Not that Inhofe craves the limelight or anything. But let's review a list of others who are concerned about clean energy, climate change and national security, who I guess according to "Flat Earth" Inhofe, are also just trying to get some publicity:

  • Former Republican Senator and Navy Secretary John Warner:

That's quite true. People think climate change is solely an environmental campaign. And I . . . consider myself strongly in support of the environmental goals of this country. But a lot of people look with a different view on that. This says, "Hey, wait a minute, irrespective of your feeling about environmental concerns, here's a practical effect. Your sons or daughters or next door neighbor might be sent out on a military mission."

  • The United States Marine Corps:

A team of energy conservation experts seeking for ways to reduce cost of keeping American boots on the ground will accompany the soldiers as they deploy.

Fuel is one of the Marine Corps's largest expense.

In the harsh Afghan climate the Marines burn through some 800,000 gallons of fuel a day. Getting fuel and water supplies into land locked Afghanistan is expensive and the convoys are often targeted by roadside bombs.

  • The Central Intelligence Agency:

The Central Intelligence Agency is launching The Center on Climate Change and National Security as the focal point for its work on the subject. The Center is a small unit led by senior specialists from the Directorate of Intelligence and the Directorate of Science and Technology.

Its charter is not the science of climate change, but the national security impact of phenomena such as desertification, rising sea levels, population shifts, and heightened competition for natural resources. The Center will provide support to American policymakers as they negotiate, implement, and verify international agreements on environmental issues. That is something the CIA has done for years. "Decision makers need information and analysis on the effects climate change can have on security. The CIA is well positioned to deliver that intelligence," said Director Leon Panetta.

    Oh, and these guys.

But James Inhofe won't worry about any of that. He'll dismiss it, just like he dismissed and attacked the character of General officers who spent decades honorably serving their country.  James Inhofe never lets honor and facts, much less those who know more about clean energy and national security, get in his way.
