Foolishness in Washington

The above video is of Jordanian Parliament erupting into a full-on brawl, and our own elected members of congress in DC are dangerously approaching these type of theatrics.  Yesterday, the Republicans walked out of the House chamber in a protest against the Democrats for issues related to the FISA legislation.  I'm not much of an expert on DC affairs, but I have no idea why this would be beneficial to the American public.  I'm not commenting so much on the legislation, but just the buffoonery involved with walking out of your place of employment.  The General was not impressed.  What are we paying these people for again?

Here in Iraq, it is common knowledge that the government is way behind the power curve.  But at least they passed some key legislation recently.  What kind of standard are we setting for the Iraqis if our own House of Representatives looks like imbeciles in the public limelight.  As American taxpayers, we need to hold our congressman responsible for earning their pay.  I urge them to get back in session and do their damn job like the rest of us on the public dole.

President Bush... (4.00 / 1)

.... has today said that not passing this wiretapping bill has put us in more danger of an attack.

Really?  Its not the fact that we invaded one country, pretty much left it to fester to attack another country, bungled the political reconciliation in that country and continue to threaten other countries?

Nope, I guess it must be the wiretapping.

Brian

DUH! (4.00 / 1)
Without wiretapping, we're leaving ourselves wide-open to an invasion by Luxemborg! C'mon, Brian, get with the program here!

 Spot-on, my friend.

As Keith O pointed out last night (0.00 / 0)
1. According to Pres. Bush, without the FISA bill, countless American citizens will die.

2. However, Bush vetoed the FISA bill because it did not grant retroactive immunity to companies accused of violating the law.

Therefore, Bush vetoed a bill that, according to his own words, would prevent the needless deaths of countless American citizens just so that he could protect a few phone companies from criminal liability.

"No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided." - Barack Obama

the walk was regarding contempt resolutions, not FISA.

I'm on twitter.

Good catch... (0.00 / 0)
...I thought it had to do with holding some Repubs in contempt because of FISA, maybe I'm confused.  The point of the post remains that congress should get their asses back to work and figure things out.

agreed (0.00 / 0)
but the vote was holding Harriet Miers and Josh Bolton in contempt of congress for refusing to answer Wexler's seopenas, which they should. And Republicans shouldnt be throwing a fit about it either.

Maybe a turning point (0.00 / 0)
I thought Republicans owned Capitol Hill, but here's Boehner leading a walkout.  They looked like losers.  This might have been a turning point.  It seemed as if those  contempt citations were just a little fig leaf to cover the failure of the Democrats, especially since the Attorney General says he won't enforce them.  The GOP reacted like it was an impeachment of Bush (not a bad idea, by the way).

I considered... (4.00 / 2)
...deploying WAAAHHHMBULANCES and sending emergency tissues to DC for the GOP House members who abandoned their post because they didn't get their way.

These pusillanimous fools proved yet again that they will not allow the Bush administration to be held to any standard of accountability. For anything. They are allowing GWB and his hacks to get away with murder.

(Hey Nixon, RockRichard, all other foward-deployed folks: Next time things don't go your way, just put your weapon down and go hang out in a bunker. It's OK, the GOP does it, and you know THEY support the troops!)  Just kidding, guys, I know you have bigger cojones than the House GOP.

The House GOP has truly given a new meaning to the phrase, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going!"

I am utterly, completely disgusted to the very core.

Really, you can group the FISA bill and... (0.00 / 0)
...the contempt citations together as far as I'm concerned. Both are about insuring that Bush and his cronies never have to be accountable for the past eight years. The Republicans in Congress are the Bush administration's last line of defense.

you cant actually (0.00 / 0)
because the contempt resolution passed, while the dems capitulated on FISA.

I'm getting sort of used to their capitulating. They've capitulated away the farm.
