McCain Campaign Responds to our Ad

by: Brandon Friedman

It didn't take the McCain campaign long to respond to our new ad.  They sent out an email blast to their base within hours.  Here's the email:

Dear Brandon,

Today we witnessed the first of the negative TV attacks that will be waged against John McCain. The liberal group VoteVets.org has begun airing an attack ad on cable television that flat out lies about John McCain's positions. And this is only the beginning.

National Liberal Democratic groups are rolling out their strategy for the General Election. It appears that the politics of "hope and change" are euphemisms for even more vicious attacks than we've ever seen before. All the usual liberal suspects; MoveOn.org, the Democratic National Committee, The New York Times and others are adding to the efforts under way by VoteVets and are plotting to spend over $20 million to smear John McCain. A line has been drawn in the sand.

The smoke and mirrors of the democrats' rhetoric betray the negative campaign tactics of their confederates. Now the shadowy 527 groups allied with them are spending unchecked millions. For them, it's not about what's best, it's all about winning. It is a sad day in our county's history that it has come to this.

We need your immediate help to combat this attack from the angry Liberal Left. There is nothing they will hold back, no limit to what they will spend, and we have to be ready to fight back and tell voters what we already know: that John McCain is the right person to lead our country on day one.

Please make an immediate contribution to help stop these attacks. The election is not until November, but these groups are already buying television ads to spread lies about John McCain. We have to prepare now so we have the resources to respond.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Rick Davis
Campaign Manager

P.S. We need your immediate help. Please make a contribution today so we can fight back against the Liberal Left that will stop at nothing to win.

HaHaHa.  As I said over at Daily Kos,

If John McCain considers it an "attack from the angry Liberal Left" when a soldier-mom and her one-year old son tell him that we don't have unlimited money and an inexhaustible military, then he's going to be really surprised when we actually start attacking his record on Iraq.  Because it's coming.

I don't get the vibe that Vote Vets is particularly one way or the other on the political spectrum. In fact, I would go so far as to say that many of us are more real Republican than they are:humble foreign policy w/o nation building, fiscal responsibility, small government, etc. In fact, I generally get the idea that common sense is king here, rather than Liberal or Conservative, but maybe that's just me.

Spot on! (0.00 / 0)
...humble foreign policy w/o nation building, fiscal responsibility, small government, etc. In fact, I generally get the idea that common sense is king here, rather than Liberal or Conservative

 Absolutely.

Social liberalism, fiscal conservatism (as opposed to today's GOP, which has it the other way around).

...I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal with a big emphasis on a strong national defense to quash Islamic extremism.  I think it's a very reasonable ad that doesn't play into the nonsense that would attack McCain's highly-respectable military credentials.  It's a way to bring attention to what his plans would be as commander-in-chief which is hardly a filthy communist ploy, but rather a very important issue in this election.  I just don't agree with that health care line from Ms. Forrest, haha.

I lost respect for McCain a long time ago. (0.00 / 0)
Straight Talk Express? Get real.

". . . the shadowy 527 groups" = Swift Boat Veterans

I think the guy will say whatever he thinks people want to hear.  I also think he's bush2-lite.

uhc

GET READY, all: (0.00 / 0)
Speaking of Swift Boat, I can guarantee that McCain and his GOP backers will pursue VoteVets, IVAW, IAVA and others very strenuously to smear the record of individuals in these groups.

It's coming. The GOP will obviously do ANYTHING to retain the presidency, as we saw in 2004.

McCain is right to worry about ads like this (0.00 / 0)
The Republicans pay lip service to the idea that government should take limited revenue and remain small in size.  Therefore, a Republican leader must prioritize because a Republican leader has promised to reduce the resources at his disposal.  McCain has quite clearly articulated his list of priorities, and Iraq is right at the top.  For VoteVets to point out that this position necessarily implies that domestic projects would suffer as a consequence of this decision is certainly a fair (and, I suspect, effective) critique.

A line has been drawn in the sand. (0.00 / 0)

I wonder about the use of the phrase. It is an old phrase, but I think that it takes on new meaning in todays world. I wonder if they used it to bring up images of the desert and the middle east. Bring it all back to fear.

Where is the lie? (0.00 / 0)
McCain has said that he would continue Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He has also said that we could be there for a tremendously long time.  He has said on many occasions that we did not have enough troops in Iraq, and that he felt it was necessary to send more.  He has repeatedly come out in favor of an attack on Iran.  These are not lies, these are quotes directly from the man himself.  All Rose Forrest is doing is calling him out on these statements and the implications they hold.  We as a country have a finite amount of resources - not an unlimited supply.  If we choose to put those resources (money, diplomacy, military power, debt, etc.) into Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran over the next four years, then we do not have those resources for domestic priorities here at home.  These are not lies, just simple economics.

For the most part, I think this election boils down pretty simply.  If you believe we should stay in Iraq at current or greater strength, vote for McCain.  If you favor permanent bases in Iraq, vote for McCain.  If you believe that Iran represents a threat that must be dealt with militarily, vote for McCain.  If you believe that President Bush has done a good job with the economy and immigration, Bush himself has said that McCain would carry forth his agenda.  Essentially, if you think the last eight years have been just peachy and you want four more just like them, vote for McCain.

If on the other hand, you think it is time for a change, there is a certain democrat senator who has made "change" a major part of his platform.

"No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided." - Barack Obama

There is no lie. (0.00 / 0)

McCain did say 1000 years, even a million would be fine.
"A thousand years. A million years. Ten million years,'' McCain said. "It depends on the arrangement we have with the Iraqi government.''

http://www.alternet.org/blogs/...

But people have forgotten that and just concentrated on the number 100. Call it our national A.D.D.

don't pay close attention? Rubbish! / sarcasm off.

Now I can't resist posting this vid a friend sent me. Yeah it's just anecdotal but still kind of insightful *cringe, take it for what its worth.

When did 9/11 happen? (Sadly, I'm not kidding)

Okay, it's funny, but a bit tilted.  Do we expect anything more from the L.A. nightclub scene or the crowd passing through Times Square?  I'd like to see the same polling done on the Mall in DC, the Riverwalk in San Antonio, and the Bay area in California.
The last girl was actually correct.  It does matter which 9/11 you are talking about.  Chile has a 9/11.  September 11th, 1973 is the day their democratically elected President, Salvador Allende (a self-proclaimed Marxist) was overthrown by General Augusto Pinochet, who went on to murder more than 3,000 Chileans in the first few months of his dictatorship.  A little history lesson.

Its from TMZ. (0.00 / 0)

I hope no one takes that as journalism at its finest. And half of those people were drunk.

But I thought it was fitting.

So.... (4.00 / 1)
...did you contribute? :)

Great ad, interesting response (the speed moreso the content).  This election will be especially interesting to watch, as many more disillusioned vets are out there and better organized than in 2004.

And that we realize McCain is not so much the patron saint of the military.

Nevertheless (0.00 / 0)
As  retired AF vet I was very relieved to read that McCain was recently instrumental in hopefully killing hopes for a DOD increase in TriCare.  This is a (partial) quote from the Air Force Times:

"Rejection of the proposal to Tricare Standard and Tricare Prime costs and to raise copayments for prescription drugs - something the Defense Department assumes will generate about $1.2 billion in savings - was first disclosed in a Tuesday letter from committee leaders to the Senate Budget Committee.
The letter, signed by committee chairman Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and ranking Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, asks the budget committee to provide $611.1 billion in new budget authority for the Defense Department for fiscal year 2009, which begins Oct. 1."

This is HUGE for many of us retirees.  The annual fee of $460/yr/family of two would have increased to over $1740 by 2011 ($900 by 2009).  I think this is indicative of McCain's inclinations about taking care of us.

I wrote a blog (0.00 / 0)
at the election center about the ad, which the ad embedded, with the facts as I understand them to be about Iraq, asking our readers why we are in Iraq and no one had an answer.  It was an interesting reaction--or lack thereof.
