My Commitment to the Armed Forces and Our Veterans

by: Congressman Ron Paul

Tue Nov 20, 2007 at 10:45:06 AM EST

Thank you for allowing me to take part in the launch of VetVoice!  It is an honor to speak to our armed forces and our veterans.  I am actually a veteran myself, having served as a U.S. Air Force Flight Surgeon during the Vietnam-era.

The most important action I will take as president to support the troops is to end our interventionist foreign policy.  Our troops are spread all over the world, meaning we may have difficulty defending ourselves from future threats.  We cannot be the policeman of the world.  It endangers our national security, isolates us from nations that would otherwise be friendly, and hurts those who provide our security.

The situation in Iraq reminds us that we are to go to war only after a congressional declaration of war, as required by the Constitution.  I opposed the Iraq War before it started, and I am gravely concerned about the current buildup to war with Iran.  My administration will pursue a coherent foreign policy.

Such a foreign policy is based on understanding that America is best served by not interfering in the internal affairs of other nations.   We should rid ourselves of the notion that we are at the mercy of the oil-producing countries- their wealth depends on our business.  We should also end our disastrous foreign aid payments and stop propping up dictators and putting band-aids on festering problems.

I will work to capture Osama bin Laden and all of his remaining 9/11 co-conspirators.

Today's soldiers should never be sent to war without clear objectives that serve definite American national security interests.  All Americans will benefit from a coherent foreign policy of non-interventionism, free trade, and self-determination.

Any nation willing to ask its men and women to risk their lives serving overseas must also be willing to take care of them when they come home. We cannot provide dignified care with a Veterans Administration that is run like the DMV.

As president, I will support reforming the Veterans Administration into an organization that efficiently tends to the well-being of millions of former service members, who rely squarely on it for health care, retirement living, and monthly payment of veteran's benefits.

My administration will also support:

  • giving employers a tax credit for hiring veterans

  • narrowing the pay gap that exists between military and private sector pay scales

  • restoring health care coverage to retired service members

  • allowing veterans to receive both disability and retirement pay

  • establishing a House Select Committee on POW and MIA Affairs

  • immediately ending the requirement that disabled veterans give up their military retirement pay in order to receive VA disability benefits
  • As a congressman, I have helped obtain medals for hundreds of veterans that should have had them years ago, and I have attempted to expedite cases for thousands of veterans with issues such as health care troubles and pension problems.  As president, I will continue to honor those who served.

My campaign has raised more money from veterans and active duty serviceman than any other presidential candidate, and I will honor their trust.

    I'll be saying this with all of them. . . . (0.00 / 0)
VetVoice asked each of the candidates to submit a post that was somewhat concise, to allow easy readability.  While that doesn't allow them to go over point-by-point details about everything they would do as President, we believe it provides a good overview of their priorities.  Because of candidate schedules, they will not be able to personally reply to comments.  We highly encourage readers to visit campaign websites to learn more about the candidates' plans.  But, feel free to offer comments, as the campaigns will read them.

    There seems to be.. (4.00 / 2)

...a breakdown in availability of VA services for many retiring wounded service members.

The VA hospitals were planned or built in the 50's through 70's when a majority of veterans were living in cities due to the low cost of living.

A majority of the veterans I have encountered lately are from rural areas outside of the cities. They can not get to the VA for their healthcare needs and end up being a burden on a civilian medical sector that is not trained to deal with combat injuries and trauma.

As president what would you do to ensure that veterans living outside of the cities can get the VA healthcare they deserve?

    Brian,
"As president what would you do to ensure that veterans living outside of the cities can get the VA healthcare they deserve? "

I recall from an interview earlier this year, that Ron Paul supported the idea that veterans should be able to go to ANY hospital/doctor of their choosing.  Not just VA hospitals.  But I don't have a source where he said that handy right now, I will see if I can find it.

    Found the source (4.00 / 1)
From his first Bill Maher interview:
    http://www.billmaher.com/?page...

PAUL: Well, what makes you think the - the Veterans Association is private. I mean, this is a demonstration of what government-run medicine will be like if you - if you like government medicine, go to the Veterans‚ hospitals and you‚ll find out what it‚s like. I mean, as a physician, and as one that had been trained in Veterans‚ hospital, most physicians and young doctors always knew what the quality of medical care was in many of our Veterans‚ hospitals. We need to allow every veteran to have decent health care, but we should permit him and pay for it to allow him to go the doctor that he wants to go to, and not make him stand in lines to get second-class care in - in some of our VA hospitals. [applause]

Do any of them actually care? (4.00 / 2)
That's my biggest question.  With somewhere in the range of 160000 troops spending 15 months away from home and not getting enough time to rest, recover and refit at home, do any of them care?

Do any of them actually understand how long 15 months, or even 12 months actually is?

Do they understand the heartbreak of a tour extensions?

Do they really understand the disaster of our VA system, where our wounded warriors go to be forgotten?

Do they understand that the system is just as broken now as it was when everyone found out about Walter Reed?

If this is truly a generational conflict and it's going to require the commitment of our country for decades, why do lawmakers continue to allow just one small segment of our military, mostly the Army and Marines, and to a lesser extent Navy and Air Force and their families to bear the ENTIRE brunt of this war?

Until even one of them goes to the mattresses for current soldiers and veterans, they haven't earned my vote.

    Reconciliation (0.00 / 0)
    Mr. Paul,

The fundamental issue that is very clear encompasses each challenge that we face as U.S. citizens.  It is not only a challenge for our elected leaders/representatives, but also for each individual who is responsible for a contribution to the fabric of this great nation.

Our people, today, are overworked, underpaid, overtaxed, and under informed.  We have developed a lack of trust in our government that has not been eased for too long.  When a majority of the public wants its leadership to act and only sees inaction, it leads many of us to believe that our neighbors in state and national congress do not have the fortitude to do the right thing.  Because we, as regular citizens, cannot spend our entire day gathering together and holding the leadership accountable, the issues just continue to go without tending; immigration, health care, the War on Terror, economics, trade policy, and more.

The only word that comes to mind is exploitation.  Our nation's greatest servants are some of the least paid professionals in this great nation; school teachers and members of our armed forces.  Yet, they work more hours, endure more stress, and have more ultimate responsibility than the elected officials who set their pay (without these two professions, there would be no elected officials).

I am writing this for each of our representatives and presidential candidates who have been respectful enough to take the time to come and make a comment here.  I have yet to make my final decision on who I will vote for in the S.C. primary in just a few short weeks.  I will say, though, that as a young man I have no intention of sitting by or letting myself being so distracted by life that I do nothing when our leadership does nothing with our contributions.  Who will break the cartel of catastrophe that has engulfed our nation for the last decade?  Who will share the American dream with the American People?

    Semper & Respectfully,

    Kent D. Fletcher

    Illegal War (0.00 / 0)
To Rep. Ron Paul - Since, by your own admission  the American - Iraq War was started without proper Congressional approval and is therefore Illegal, will you as President pardon and clear the records of those members of the military who refused to participate for the stated reason that  to do so would constitute an offense against the Constitution and their Oath? In addition, will you as President prosecute those that started this War on top of Bloody lie after Bloody lie?

And for the record, I am not a Vet . I also forgot to thank Vote Vets
    for this opportunity. Thank you.

    Ron Paul - the pro-veteran Air Force flight surgeon (4.00 / 2)
I am a big fan, and I had no idea how strong on veterans issues you really were.

Your support for tax credits for hiring veterans is a great idea.

Also, another reason I think people will support you and your message is that you're the only physician running for President.  Health care, and veterans health care, is a major issue this election - and you have the best plant to solve these problems.

Now I know why veterans and active duty servicemen support you so much financially with your campaign - you take care of them unlike these other politicians!

    Thank you VetVoice.

Who are the only candidates that have been right since the beginning?

Don't get me wrong, the 8 candidates that got the most important vote of their career wrong are good people, but do they deserve to be President when they definitly made the wrong decision?

Go ask the more than 3,800 families if the 8 candidates that voted incorrectly back in October 2002 should be rewarded the Presidency of the United States.

    Veteran Dr. Ron Paul (4.00 / 1)
I am a Veteran like you. In all my years I have never met a man with so much integrity and a politician I can 100% trust. You are that man! When I was on a street corner you pulled your van over to say hello to me. You did not know me. But the time you spent with me I could tell you are the real mccoy that all freedom loving Americans seek. I looked into your soul when you shook my hand and all I could see was the honesty and goodness within you.
I have never given my money and self to any presidential candidate and you are my first. I will do everything within my power to help you win so tomorrow's veterans will not have to fight any unlawful wars.

From the rest of my veteran  brother's,
Stop voting for the lesser of two evils. Get away from the mainline Democrats AND Republicans....if you look at their stands on the issues...there isn't much difference and the big corporations have 'em all in their pockets.

    Thanks (4.00 / 2)
Sir, it means alot that you have added your voice to ours on this site.  Veterans are tired of having other people put words in their mouths and Vetvoice allows us to speak for ourselves.  Thank you for caring about the troops, it means something to us.

    Thanksgiving Day (4.00 / 2)
I'll be waving a homemade sign in support of The Revolution all day long Thursday to Sunday!

    Thank You Ron Paul (0.00 / 0)
    Dear Ron Paul

I believe in defense, I love my country, I am proud that I have served and believe it is an honor for anyone to serve.

The ugly part is, this pride has been taken advantage of and used and it has to stop and your words are like fresh air, finally, somebody is willing to put the brakes on our military intervention for profit and that's what it is and it's sickening and it has to end or one day we will shamefully say we were once American.

Thank you - I'm rooting all the way for you.  You make it on the ballet so that all Americans can have an opportunity to vote for what is right.

Thankyou vets and those on active duty anywhere in the world. You guys are the top! To you guys in Iraq and Afghanistan, my prayer is you will all be home soon, safe and sound.

But I'm not just praying for your return -- I and a lot of other folks are doing everything we know how to do to get you home. You've given much more than your share, and it's time to bring you home. You are not forgotten. Keep the faith.
